🍬 A Sweet Piece of New Orleans History! ⚜️

Some traditions are too special to fade away—and Roman Candy is one of them.

This nostalgic tee celebrates one of New Orleans’ most beloved icons, whose story began over a century ago.

As a young boy, Sam Cortese survived a tragic streetcar accident that cost him both of his lower legs. Unable to continue school, he began selling fruits and vegetables from a pushcart. His mother, Angelina Napoli Cortese, made a treasured family-recipe molasses taffy for holidays, and Sam started offering the leftover candy alongside his produce. Before long, customers came for the candy more than the vegetables!

In 1915, Sam designed the famous white-and-red Roman Candy wagon, complete with a marble slab and running water so he could make fresh taffy while traveling the streets of New Orleans.

The name “Roman Candy” also carries an important story. During a time of strong anti-Italian prejudice, Sam chose the name “Roman” instead of “Italian” Candy to help his business succeed while honoring his heritage.

Today, more than 100 years later, the tradition lives on through his family using the original wagon frame and the same three classic flavors—vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
